These sweet dough balls
are very similar in taste to doughnuts. The outside is slightly harder and
almost crunchy but the inside is lighter. Btw, don’t they look so festive?!
Perfect for this time of the year!
Ingredients
6dl milk
4dl water
1tbsp sugar
25gr yeast
500gr flour
3tbsp oil
1tsp salt
1 egg
Oil for frying
Process
Combine 2dl finger warm (37 °) milk with
sugar, yeast and 2tbsp of flour. Leave to poof.
In a large bowl combine flour, salt, oil and
egg, mix for a little while, then add the yeast mixture.
Combine 4dl milk and water. Add to the dough
in stages, beat the dough in between. Add more flour if needed. Beat the dough
until its smooth and bubbly, around 10min. Sprinkle a thin layer of flour over
the top, cover the bowl with a kitchen towel then leave to proof ca 4min or
until it doubles in size.
If you have the time, after the dough has
doubled in size, beat it for a min or two, then leave to proof for another
30min. This way you’ll get lighter dough, with more air in it.
Warm up some oil in a pot with high sides. The
dough bowls should “swim” in the hot oil. Add a spoon full of the dough and let
it fry until it gets golden brown on all sides.
You can serve them warm or cold. If you want
to cover them in powdered sugar, wait until they cool completely, otherwise the
sugar will melt. Personally, I like them warm with some jam and cold with the
powdered sugar and jam!
